Ministry of Transport Said Discussions On Singapore-Johor Bahru Link Project Can Be Finalised By End-July

Singapore expressed optimism that discussions related to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link campaign could be concluded by the end of July, reported Channel News Asia (CNA).

“Like Malaysia, we are hopeful that the discussions on the remaining matters can be concluded by the 31 July due date,” a speaker for the Ministry of Transport (MOT) advised CNA.

This comes as Singapore and Malaysia have been engaged in “extensive discussion” over the RTS Link campaign, stated the ministry.

Works on the RTS Link, which was originally set for completion by 2024, has ever since been suspended.

In fact, the interruption had been prolonged three times at the demand of Malaysia. The current extension was because of the enforcement of the “breaker” measures to suppress the spread of Covid-19 in Singapore along with Malaysia’s movement control order.

The RTS link will also link to the Woodlands North MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

Johor’s Chief Minister Hasni Mohammad reportedly forecasts the job to start work in November.

According to him, both countries are set to sign the agreement on the job by end-July, reported The Star.

Malaysian Transportation Minister Wee Ka Siong also claimed it will await the city-state’s new Cabinet to form, considered that Singapore’s General Election have been completed over the weekend.

“If we are able to finalize the arrangements next week, the time would have come for us to seal the agreement. We must do all this before the 31 July due date,” said Wee.

To link up Woodlands in Singapore to Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru, the RTS Link will serve around 10,000 commuters per hour each way, helping relieve traffic bottleneck on the Causeway.
